The Legend of the gift from Sir Richard Weed
Legend has it that many years ago, in the hills of Scotland, there was a young man so gifted physically and athletically that young men envied him and woman swooned around him. Yet those were the days of his youth. As Richard grew older, age began to rob him of his athletic abilities and he became consumed with much bitterness. Thankfully through the haze of bitterness Richard maintained two loves; this new game of golf and the time honored craftsmanship of working with leather.
Then one day a thought occurred to him….if he could somehow channel his bitterness into the two things he loved then the bitterness could be transformed into fulfillment.
What he did next started a tradition that lives on today: You see, Sir Richard had a fellow golfer that drove him crazy with his constant poor sportsmanship, whining and complaining and suspected rules embellishment. Instead of allowing the negative antics from this poor chap to consume Richard he decided to take a different path.
He made the man a small leather bag, to hold his tees, ball, and other “tools.” He engraved the man's name on the front of the bag, and sent it to him. He did not let on that he had sent it. He simply added a note that said “giving you this bag has released some inner bitterness that I feel towards you. If fact, I feel so uplifted from giving you this small gift that I am recommending that you send one forward to other golfers whom you may feel the same about.”
So legend states:
The act of sending a personalized gift forward, releases inner bitterness that hampers calm play and this brings on tranquility and good luck. Conversely, and according to legend, not sending the gift forward could bottle up ones inner turmoil and may cause the yips and shanks..
So if you are on the links and you see a golfer with the yips, shanks, cursing, whining or complaining you may want to send him a Sir Richard Weed Bag to help release his inner bitterness.. Or you may just feel like the bag fits.
Mind you there have some golfers that did not follow the tradition and continued their fine play. But there are some who rejected the tradition and did not send on a gift forward and…well let’s just say some have found it difficult to break 100 and some have given up the sport altogether. Some modern day famous ones have been relegated to commentating and mysteriously can’t find their game. Who knows?
